Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is with great sadness that I report that one of our students died yesterday in a bicycle accident. We know there are a lot of emotions at this difficult time and we want you to know we are here to help you in any way we can.

Mr. Edwards spoke with me this morning and I’d like to share with you what he had to say about Cain:

Cain was a very bright student who qualified for our G.A.T.E. Program. He loved his dog, his grandparents, his football team and his mother who was his hero. His big personality and infectious smile could take over an entire room. We ALL love and will miss Cain dearly.

Each of us will react to death in our own way, and we need to be respectful of each other’s response. During this difficult time, counselors will be available to support students, staff and parents as needed to help them deal with this loss and to help them understand more about the grieving process.

You are also encouraged to talk with your child(ren) about their thoughts and feelings about this death. Provide outlets for expression such as drawing, writing, talking and any other engaging activities. Be honest. When they ask difficult questions, it’s okay to say you don’t know the answer. Reassure them of their own health and safety and make sure they know that you are emotionally available to them.

If your child(ren) (or you) would like to speak with a counselor, please contact Miller Ridge Elementary 513.420.4559. In addition, here are some other resources that are available to you and your child(ren):

  • Crisis Text Line: Text “HOME” to 741-741 to text a live trained counselor

  • Addressing Grief: National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)

When the time comes, we will follow the family’s wishes regarding sharing information about memorial arrangements. We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the family, friends, and teachers of Cain. We hope the family finds peace and comfort during this difficult time.

If I can be of further assistance to you, or if you have any questions, please contact me at mstyles@middletowncityschools.com

Sincerely,

Marlon Styles
