Dear Families and Neighbors of Middletown Schools:
Each school year, the Middletown City School District (MCSD) administrators re-evaluate the district’s open enrollment policy. At the March 18, 2019 Board of Education (BOE) meeting, Marlon Styles, Jr., MCSD Superintendent, discussed the MCSD Elementary Expansion Project and he determined the district can no longer accept kindergarten-8th grade open enrollment requests for families who live outside of the Middletown City School District.
Since 2017, MCSD has identified addressing overcrowding and space concerns in the elementary buildings as a priority. By closing open enrollment for the 2019-20, 2020-2021 school years, MCSD can provide short-term space relief in our schools until the district completes the elementary expansion project.
The district reached this decision by reviewing board policy JECBB-R (Admission of Interdistrict Transfer Students). The policy states students native to MCSD and students whose parents are full-time employees of the district receive priority. The district will continue to accept open enrollment requests for employees. The policy also states out-of-district parents must reapply each school year. At this time, Middletown Schools will not grant acceptance for new or current open enrolled students (K-8th grade) for the 2019-20 school year.
